A tragic train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the speed and management of the country's key public works projects.
The accident happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a line developed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.
“We will thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this tragedy,” declared the national leader.
The president confirmed that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The official stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.
Flagship Project of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the immediate past president, whose time in office concluded the previous year. This venture was a hallmark of his government's developmental agenda for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to kickstart the economic fortunes of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions
The development of both rail lines was supervised by the armed forces, marking a significant growth of its role in national works. They were completed at an fast-tracked pace, defying predictions to be at least partly launched before the end of that government.
However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously sparked persistent apprehensions over construction quality.
- Sunday's derailment was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This includes an prior collision this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-fatal derailments.
Appeals for Investigation and Halt
In the wake of the catastrophe, the chief of a major opposition party called for an urgent pause in the development and management of all similar projects.
This halt was requested until the completion of a comprehensive independent investigation. The party emphasized that the situation "demands immediate answers."
In response, the head of state maintained that the train had been running in full adherence to all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the construction and operation of these vital projects.
