Individuals Stopping Weight-Loss Injections Put On Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Weight management often requires ongoing approaches.

A recent study reveals that individuals who come off blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like semaglutide or tirzepatide may regain shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt traditional diet and exercise regimens.

Findings released in a prominent medical journal points out that while obese individuals often shed about a fifth of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"Users using these treatments must be informed of the danger of quick weight regain when the medication ends," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery means a return to starting mass within about one and a half years.

Weighing Approaches

The analysis, which looked at dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.

Researchers note that people who lose weight through diet and exercise generally experience a more gradual creep back—around 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

The Reason for the Fast Rebound

Doctors believe the way of the jabs explains the heightened regain.

The injections mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate hunger.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations several times higher than normal may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and may also lessen sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' results in appetite is uncontrolled, making excessive eating a significant risk."

A Lifelong Condition?

Health authorities advise the injections for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians contend that, considering the high risk of weight regain, the treatment should be considered ongoing.

This perspective is supported by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "underscore the persistent nature of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

Patient Experiences

People who have come off the jabs report a intense return of appetite.

"I experienced a trigger flipping and I was suddenly starving," recalled one woman.

The struggle is compounded if individuals have not developed permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.

Growing Use

Figures show that millions of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is higher among females compared to males.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
  • Many access the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

In conclusion, researchers stress that while these medications are potent agents for weight loss, they are not a magic cure and maintained weight loss hinges on combined lifestyle changes.
