Prime TV Selections: Seven Essential Films This Week

Highlighted Choice

The Substance

The filmmaker's daring satire examines the demanding standards for feminine aesthetics as well as the dreaded aspects of advancing years. Hollywood star Demi Moore presents a masterful performance in the role of Elisabeth, a mature film star forced into presenting an aerobics show on the small screen. Forced aside by her unscrupulous employer Harvey, she undergoes a mysterious and gruesome process called the Substance. This produces a youthful duplicate called Sue, culminating in a progressively vampiric relationship between the two. This Friday, the streaming service Paramount+

The Woman in Cabin 10 Film

This Agatha Christie-esque thriller includes the talented actress as Laura, an ace reporter who takes a break from covering international wars to embark on a luxury cruise alongside a gravely sick Norwegian shipping heiress and philanthropist, her husband, plus additional filthy rich individuals. Yet once a mysterious woman falls into the sea overnight and everyone denies she ever existed, Laura's investigative instincts kick in. Streaming currently, the Netflix platform

This Supernatural Story

The acclaimed director tests his directorial skills through this nifty supernatural story filmed completely from the perspective of the spirit. When a household including mother Rebekah and her distressed teen Chloe settles into their new suburban house, the filming device – as the unseen entity – follows them around. The teen shows signs of aware of the supernatural presence, and it looks like protective of her. Yet what is the reason? The premise is enjoyable that remains concise, with a twist that may be unexpected. Saturday 11 October, 4.35pm, 10.10pm, Sky Cinema Premiere

This Self-Referential Film

Cage wholeheartedly adopts his unique fame in this meta comedy caper. He portrays a narcissistic Hollywood actor playing himself who takes on a million-dollar gig to attend a birthday party on the Spanish island for the wealthy Javi, played by Pedro Pascal. Recruited by the CIA to spy on the potential kingpin, the actor's “nouveau shamanic acting ability” comes in handy. October 11th, 9pm, Channel 4

The Black Phone

Scott Derrickson's claustrophobic thriller holds up well even without a continuation. Located in 1978 Denver, a series of kidnappings has made the youth on edge. After Finney is kidnapped by the villain and imprisoned in a basement, he dreads a fatal end. But the disconnected phone in the room continues to ring, with spooky callers providing assistance, while the intuitive nightmares of his sister Gwen could save him. A solid creepfest. This Saturday, 10.50pm, the Film4 channel

The Eyes of Tammy Faye

In the struggle between spirituality and money, it's a knockout win for Mammon in Showalter's wonderfully garish biopic regarding the shamed religious broadcaster and her criminal husband. Andrew Garfield plays the venal Jim, who proclaims initially, asserting religious justification for riches. He and Tammy Faye commence monetising the American public's spiritual convictions. It's a spectacle of poor styling, excessive cosmetics and insincerity, yet Jessica Chastain manages to depict the real-life figure with compassion. October 14th, early morning, the Film4 channel

This Espionage Thriller

This week's another release from Steven Soderbergh delivers a spy mystery as precise as the polo necks sported by the actor's UK spy. He is tasked to discover a traitor among the team from a group of five – including is Kathryn, played by Cate Blanchett. Both actors are masters of deadpan cool, resulting in an engaging mind game of fact versus fiction unfolds. The supporting cast take part the clever spy entertainment. Friday 17 October, 8.05am, 12.55pm, 8pm, Sky Cinema Premiere
